Delving into the Methodology of Women’s History, FIB Unhas Public Lecture Features Expert from UGM

FIB Unhas — The Department of History, Faculty of Cultural Sciences (FIB) Universitas Hasanuddin, successfully organized a Public Lecture titled “Methodology of Women’s History Writing” on Wednesday (8/10/2025). The event featured a history expert from Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), Dr. Mutiah Amini, M.Hum., as the keynote speaker.

The event, held at the Arsjad Rasjid Lecture Theater on the 8th floor, was attended with high enthusiasm by students and lecturers. This theme was raised as an effort to enrich perspectives in Indonesian historiography (history writing), which on many occasions still focuses on male-dominated grand narratives.

In her presentation, Dr. Mutiah Amini discussed in-depth how historical research methodologies can be applied to position women as primary subjects. She highlighted the importance of gender sensitivity in reading archives and historical sources, as well as how this research can produce a more complete and inclusive understanding of history.

“Writing women’s history is not just about adding female figures to history books, but about how we change our lens in viewing events. We investigate their experiences, roles, and agency that may have been overlooked,” explained Dr. Mutiah in her presentation.

The discussion session was interactive, marked by various critical questions from participants, indicating a keen interest in this field of study which still has wide room for exploration.

This public lecture is expected to provide inspiration and academic enrichment, especially for the academic community of the Unhas History Department. This activity also affirms the department’s commitment to supporting the development of progressive and diverse perspectives in historical studies.
