A Two-Day Workshop
Makassar, Indonesia | 16–17 November 2026
The Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Universitas Hasanuddin, in cooperation with the SEASREP Foundation, invites applications from junior scholars interested in Southeast Asian Studies to participate in the Nurturing Network of Junior Scholars of Southeast Asian Studies, a two-day intensive workshop to be held in Makassar, Indonesia, on 16–17 November 2026.
About the Workshop
This intensive workshop is designed to strengthen Southeast Asian Studies by promoting and nurturing junior scholars working on various aspects of Southeast Asia, including history, anthropology, film studies, economy, literature, and related fields.
The workshop will explore conceptual and methodological aspects of Southeast Asian Studies, the formulation of research ideas and proposals within a regional studies framework, as well as opportunities for independent and collaborative research across national borders.
Focus of the Workshop
One of the main focuses of this round is the study of communities along the Straits of Makassar corridor, stretching from the Nusa Tenggara archipelago to the southern Philippine islands.
The workshop welcomes research addressing the movement of:
- People
- Goods
- Ideas
Possible themes include human trafficking, smuggling and cross-border trading, border issues, regional cooperation, comparative traditions, and identity formation. Applicants are also welcome to propose other themes concerning different parts of Southeast Asia.
Expected Outcome
By the end of the workshop, participants are expected to submit an improved statement of research interests that can serve as a direction for their future academic endeavors in the field of Southeast Asian Studies.

A team of scholars from Universitas Hasanuddin will also provide historical and anthropological contexts for the workshop.
Who Can Apply?
To ensure the effectiveness of the workshop, only 30 participants will be admitted.
Interested applicants should:
- Be under 40 years of age.
- Hold a bachelor’s degree in humanities or social sciences and not yet hold a Ph.D.
- Have academic interests in Southeast Asian Studies, demonstrated through a short statement of interests that includes their planned or ongoing research theme.
- Demonstrate an interest in a comparative study of two or more Southeast Asian nations, including their own, or focus on one Southeast Asian nation other than their own.
- Be prepared to participate in a workshop conducted fully in English.
Workshop Support
The workshop is free of charge. Snacks and lunch will be provided for participants during the workshop.
The organizers are unable to provide transportation tickets to and from Makassar. However, limited free accommodationis available for international participants, including room and dinner during the workshop. The organizers can also provide information concerning logistical arrangements.

The application should consist of:
- A letter of statement outlining the applicant’s academic interests and planned or ongoing research; and
- A complete CV.
