FIB Unhas Senate Approves Cultural Space Names and Discusses Academic Governance Strengthening

FIB Unhas — The Senate of the Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Hasanuddin University, held a Senate Meeting on Thursday (30/4/2026) at the Senate Room of FIB Unhas. The two-hour meeting discussed several strategic agendas, including the consideration of the new Head of the English Literature Department, the naming of cultural facilities, and the approval of proposals for lecturers’ functional promotions.

The meeting was chaired by Prof. Dr. Muhammad Darwis and attended by faculty leaders and senate members. The session began with a collective prayer for two colleagues who were currently ill, reflecting the faculty’s sense of academic solidarity.

One of the meeting’s main discussions focused on naming newly renovated cultural facilities at FIB Unhas. After extensive discussions involving cultural, linguistic, and public-space considerations, participants officially agreed on the names “Teater Terbuka Fahmi Syariff” and “Taman Sastra J.E. Tatengkeng.”

The Dean of FIB Unhas explained that the facilities are expected to become spaces for cultural expression as well as vibrant public areas for students and the academic community. “What matters most is not merely the name, but how these spaces can be utilized optimally for cultural and academic activities,” he stated during the meeting.

The senate also officially approved Dr. Pratiwi Bahar as the new Head of the English Literature Department, replacing the previous chair who had been assigned to a university-level position. The selection process reportedly followed internal departmental procedures and institutional considerations.

Another important agenda involved the discussion of lecturers’ functional promotion proposals. The debate became dynamic as several senate members emphasized the importance of review by the Academic Integrity Committee (KIA). The senate eventually approved the proposals conditionally while awaiting the committee’s final administrative recommendations.

Toward the end of the meeting, senate members also raised concerns regarding parking management at the faculty, which they believed requires immediate improvement for the comfort of the academic community.

Through this meeting, FIB Unhas reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening academic governance while developing more inclusive and productive cultural spaces for the advancement of humanities studies.
